19 - Climb on the Roof

The kids and I discussed how to safely do this and I trusted them all to do it. Gever Tulley is very clear in his book - and at his school, The Tinkering School, that skills are taught and that kids are given particular priviledges as long as they don't hurt themselves or others. If I had any doubt that any of the kids didn't get what was expected, they would not have been up there.

It is was exciting and they sure looked super-cute way up high!

Dangerous? Definately, but the controlled type. They loved looking at these pictures.

  1. Wouldn't you love to be able to participate in his Tinkering School? I really want to make his climbing structures. Awesomeness!

  2. My son helped put shingles on the roof of a cousin's workshop when he was around 6. His Dad and cousin had taught him about ladder (3 points of contact) and roof safety. I only made it to the top of the ladder to let them know about the white oak snake (huge!) that had just slithered off the dirt pile in the yard and into the woods. I'll have to go all the way and get on the roof one day.

  3. But can they reach the pool from there?
